Fit-in 15 for Active Living, an iPod Shuffle, and a $20 iTunes Gift Card

Wednesday, June 17, 2009   ·
A few weeks ago, I wrote an e-mail to a friend in which I joked that I hadn't actively worked out for a sustained period of more than five minutes since 1986. Something about that joke sounded less hyperbolic and more true, so I thought back over the last 21 years and realized that, unless you count the belly dancing class I took a couple of years ago that I skipped out on half the time, I haven't seriously exercised except for walks to the grocery store since 1988. That's 21 years, people.

Yeah. I'll let that sink in for a second.

I kind of freaked out about how I was probably rushing myself into an early grave and ordered Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred while directing the Palinode to bring home some light hand weights after work. Just when I was wondering how I was going to keep myself on track with this whole exercise-to-stave-off-death thing, because my track record is terrible, I was contacted asked if I would like to participate in the Canadian Chiropractic Association's one-week active living challenge, the Fit-in 15.

What is Fit-in 15?
Fit-in 15 has been developed by Canada’s Doctors of Chiropractic, experts in muscle and joint function, and champions of healthy living. They recognize that it can be hard to find time in a busy day to focus on physical activity. That’s why they created Fit-in 15, an easy and manageable way to start the habit. Once Fit-in 15 becomes a regular part of your day, you may find yourself fitting in more.

This came at just the right time. I figure that if I layer the Fit-in 15's motivational e-mails and progress calendar onto my Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred, I might just be able to turn this physical activity thing into a daily habit.

You can't really tell how very, very much I need this in the photo below, because, you know, the HOTNESS, but my body sort of feels like a soft loaf of Wonderbread. Normally, I would keep this sort of thing to myself, but I am willing to go to great lengths to keep myself on track, and if that means showing you my pasty, white, kind of blurry midsection, then that's what I'll do. Fit-in 15 is more about encouraging people to start small and simply begin forming the habit of being active every day and less about dramatic transformation, but I wanted to show you what has motivated me to take part in this challenge. For your health and safety, I am keeping the present state of my butt to myself.

Day 1 - the Shred

And guess what? I have a motivational carrot to dangle in front of you, and we all love motivational carrots. I have an iPod shuffle with a $20 iTunes gift card to give away. Here's how to qualify:
  • You must be a Canadian resident to enter this giveaway.
  • Tell me what you do on a daily basis to stay physically active or tell me how you are participating in Fit-in 15 in the comments for a chance to win.
  • If you also post about Fit-in 15 on your website, leave a second comment here with a link back to your entry, and you'll have TWO chances to win!

  • Physical activity! Health! An iPod Shuffle! Leave a comment!

I know for a fact that you have an awesome butt. Just look at DK's pics from Abigail's stagette.

As for me, I haven't been doing anything to keep active, but I like this 15 min idea. I am going to drag myself to the gym today, and hopefully work my way up from there.

Thanks for sharing this - if you can do it, so can I!

    Sooooooo...

Finally a giveaway open to residents of Canada. One in which I would be interested in participating, of course. Oh well.

    Those are cute jeans btw.

Not that it ever helps the size of my ass, but on average, I'm walking 30-60mins a day and covering up to 7 kms while doing it.

I can't go to a gym-just the thought gives me hives. But I have to walk home from work, which keeps me moving. A shuffle would most definitely be an upgrade over the 30.00 2gb piece of poo I currently use to keep me moving. :)

My 5 month old and I walk at least 25 minutes a day, often more. Also, I currently do a once-a-week circuit/spin class and once I return from my summer vacation, I have signed up for similar classes 5 days a week.

BUT the most exciting thing I have recently started is a photodiet wherein my friend and I email one another pics of everything we eat and of us engaged in physical activity. You can read more about it more on my blog if you're interested. So far it has been an awesome motivator.

Uh, just to be clear... my five month old is in a stroller. I do the walking.

oh lord help me, i've signed up... 15 minutes, if i can't commit to this, there are serious issues to address.

One small thing I do to keep active is to shun elevators whenever possible. It's amazing how much taking the stairs actually does for you, especially when you have to walk down and then back up 5 flights of stairs twice a day at work to get a donut and an iced cap. :)

I just signed up -- looks interesting, and maybe thinking in terms of 15 minute increments will help me stay motivated/on track.

For the past six weeks or so, I've been making more of an effort to be active, using the Wii Fit and Tae Bo work outs to do the trick. I *try* to be active five days a week, but will settle for three days. Yesterday I gave myself an ultimatum: if I decide to skip a work out, I have to DO something with that time (like sort through paper work or some other arduous task) -- no wussing out to site on my ass. I figure this way I'll either a) stick to my work out plan, or b) end up with a tidier house. ;)

I take the stairs at home (four flights) unless we have groceries, and there are stairs separating my work space from everything else in the office, so that's helped shape up the gams.

I also started a separate blog in which to track my "progress" (such as it is). I will post about Fit-In 15 and your post later today.

I'm doing the Shred DVDs as well, and now I'm going to incorporate the Fit in 15 program into my day as well!

Thanks for linking to that site!

    Oh yes, the hotness!

I get walked by the dogs...err walk the dogs four times a day and end up running/being dragged down the beach for at least an hour every day. And then there is the stick throwing, and the crazy excitement that follows that, and somehow, suddenly I am in the ocean, WITH the dogs, and all the splashing and jumping over waves with them.

Fit in 15 sounds like a good challenge. Thanks for the link.

All I've done for a while now is stretching - twice a day for 10 minutes each time. And, boy, am I flexible!

But forget aerobic stamina or muscle strength. So Fit-in 15 sounds like a great challenge for me. Thanks for connecting me with it.

This is a really good idea. I have been moving more lately, but the more motivation, the better. I signed up for the emails.

And I wrote about it too

This is a great idea. I walk the dog 15 minutes every day, but lately that has been it. I'm going to vamp it up!

Your midsection is magnificent jus the way it is. You are going to be frighteningly hot if you actually start working at it. Yikes. Me, I have to labour like a lumberjack just to keep things as they are. i walk 20 minutes to and from work every morning at a good clip. I go to an aerobics class 3 times a week and I run 5 k at least once a week. I also walk pretty much everywhere else I go and am very careful with what I eat. I don't want to be part of the ocntest, but I did want to comment on your sexy belly

    xup, aw, thanks!

It's me and the Wii Fit, baby! Now that my DAUGHTER is having trouble fitting into her clothes, we're working out together and it's FUN! Loves it :) We do an hour 3 days a week, and in between we walk, take the stairs, do some weights, wrestle LOL it adds up to 15 minutes easily :)

    Blogger Tamara

I have been using my wii fit, and walking either to or from work. I am going to sign up for the Fit in 15 website, and hope to continue this activity throughout the summer.

Thanks for this! I just signed up for the Fit in 15 (great website!) and I'm thinking the nudges from the emails will be enough to get me outside to play. Because the baby fat doesn't look really good when my baby is almost FIVE.

    Thanks,S!

You look great already! Good luck with the program, though - it always feels so good to get a bit of exercise. I like to get out and run every other day or so. It has helped me lose baby weight and it ALWAYS improves my mood and clears my head if I've been feeling cooped up or stressed out about anything.

I think that this is really helpful. With the busy lifestyle of moms, a 15 minute exercise would really be helpful. Thank you for sharing this.:)
